With reference to your further letter dated 22 September last, respecting the Salary of the Colonial Surgeon at Kowloon (Hong Kong), I am directed by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to request you to acquaint the Earl of Carnarvon of their approval of a Salary of $700 a year being allowed for the appointment; and of the holder being permitted to engage in private practice, on the distinct condition that no neglect of his duties to the Colonial government be thereby entailed.
